First Grade Math by Hooked On Math (frequently asked questions)
Q. What should my child know about math by first grade?
A. Children entering first grade should be able to identify and use numbers up to 10. They should understand that numbers represent real-world objects and know how to count two sets of objects to get a sum. By the end of first grade, they should be able to identify and use numbers up to 100.
Q. When should my child know multiplication and division?
A. Multiplication with factors up to 10 (we recommend up to 12) is generally taught in third grade, although some children are ready for it in second grade. Multiplication of larger numbers usually comes in fourth grade, when division is also introduced.
